If you are planning a trip to Rotterdam with children, then you might be wondering whether Kop van Zuid Rotterdam with kids is actually a place you should include. Because, to be honest, when you first look at it, it doesn’t immediately feel like the most obvious area for families.
However, that first impression is a bit misleading. Because once you are there, Kop van Zuid turns out to be one of those places that works really well with kids, just not in the way you might expect.
So in this article, we walk you through what you can actually do here with children, what it feels like to spend time in this area, and how to decide if it fits into your trip.
First of all: what is Kop van Zuid?
To begin with, Kop van Zuid is a modern waterfront area just across the river from the city centre. You reach it via the Erasmus Bridge, which already feels like part of the experience.
This area used to be part of the old port, but now it is full of modern buildings, wide streets and open spaces. Because of that, it feels very different from the rest of Rotterdam. It is less busy, less chaotic, and much more spread out.
And that is exactly why it works with kids.
What it actually feels like to be here with kids
This is something that is hard to explain until you are there.
Kop van Zuid is not packed with attractions. There are no flashing signs, no constant entertainment, and no obvious “family zone”. But at the same time, it doesn’t feel boring either.
Because there is space.
Children can walk without constantly bumping into crowds. You are not navigating tight streets or busy squares. Instead, you have wide paths, water on one side, and views that keep changing.
So instead of rushing from one activity to the next, this is one of the few places in Rotterdam where the time in between actually feels easy.
Walking across the Erasmus Bridge

Before you even get there, you already have a moment that stands out.
Walking across the Erasmus Bridge with kids is something most people underestimate. It looks like just a bridge, but once you are on it, it feels big, open and slightly dramatic.
Kids notice the height, the wind, the water below. It feels like you are really arriving somewhere.
That said, it can be quite windy. So if you are with younger children, you will probably keep them a bit closer while crossing.
Villa Zebra: one place that is actually made for kids
If you are looking for something that is clearly designed for children, then Villa Zebra is the place to go.
This is not a museum where kids just walk around and look at things. Here, they are expected to touch, build and explore. And that makes a big difference.
We noticed that younger children especially get completely absorbed here. They don’t feel like they are visiting a museum at all.
At the same time, it is not huge. After about one to two hours, most families are ready to move on. So it works best as part of your day, not the main event.
Luxor Theater
You will probably pass the Nieuwe Luxor Theater while you are here. It looks impressive, and naturally you might wonder if it is something to do with kids.
In most cases, it is not. Most shows are aimed at adults, so it is not something we would plan around when visiting with children.
If you are specifically looking for theatre that is designed for children, then Jeugdtheater Hofplein is a better fit. That said, most performances are in Dutch, as the theatre mainly focuses on local children and young performers. Therefore, unless your children understand Dutch, it is probably not something you would include during a short visit.
SS Rotterdam: surprisingly interesting
A short distance away, you will find the SS Rotterdam.

This is one of those places that works better than you might expect. Because it is a real ship, everything feels a bit more exciting. Walking through the corridors, going outside on the deck, seeing how big it actually is.
For younger kids, it depends a bit on their patience. But for children who like exploring, this can easily keep them interested for a while.
Katendrecht: where it becomes more lively
Once you are done with Kop van Zuid itself, it makes sense to walk a bit further to Katendrecht.
This area feels different straight away. There is more energy, more places to sit, more going on. It feels less open and a bit more lived-in.
The Fenix Food Factory is a good example of that. It is not a typical kids attraction, but it works because it is informal. You can sit down, grab something to eat, and children are not expected to sit perfectly still.
That combination works well after a walk through Kop van Zuid.
What you should not expect here
This is probably the most important part.
If you are looking for playgrounds, rides, or constant entertainment, this is not the area for that. There are fewer obvious “kid activities” compared to other parts of Rotterdam.
But that does not mean it is not a good place to go.
It just means you need to approach it differently.
How much time do you actually need?
In reality, most families spend around two to three hours in Kop van Zuid.
That gives you enough time to walk across the bridge, explore the area a bit, and visit something like Villa Zebra.
If you add Katendrecht or the SS Rotterdam, it naturally turns into half a day.
Trying to stretch it longer than that usually does not add much.
Is Kop van Zuid easy with a stroller?
Yes, very easy. Because the area is modern, everything is wide and easy to navigate. There are no stairs, no tight corners, and no difficult surfaces.
Compared to older parts of cities, this feels simple and comfortable.
So, should you go to Kop van Zuid with kids?
If you are expecting a packed schedule full of activities, then this might not be your favourite part of the city.
But if you are looking for a place where things feel a bit calmer, where you can combine a few good stops with space and views, then it fits in very naturally.
For us, it worked best as part of the day. Not the main reason to visit Rotterdam, but definitely a place we were glad we didn’t skip.
And in the end, that is often exactly what you want during a city trip with kids!
